I'm facing more scrutiny with even the littlest of things from my hair to my shoes and everything in between.

I've stepped the game up gear wise, but must I alter my natural hair to accomodate other people's issues or is it all a part of what's considered professional.

Hampton Univ. (i beleive) recently banned cornrows as a hairstyle from their business college. While I don't agree with their stance, particularly being an HBCU who of all places should respect and welcome our people and our culture in our natural state, I'm wondering if culture and professionalim are two different things and do they have to be for black folks?

For example in a piece of my culture it's appropriate to get tatoos, dress sparringly and kiss on each check....in the corporate world these are faux pas.

So back to the topic at hand, for a natural (read no perm) sista is it okay for me to blow out the 'fro and rock what I like to call my Ludacris? or should I continue to slick it back and tie it up and wear very conserative natural styles? Where do two stranded twists fall? Some folks think they resemble locs others not so much.... I'm just curious.

Some say you have to learn to play the game before you can change the rules - what are the rules first of all and what if I don't want to play?

A Job and a CAREER!

I got a promotion. Yeah me!

I worked really hard, did my best and won out over 2 other highly qualified candidates for a top executive position in a coveted and very rewarding department within a Fortune 500 Company!

I'm so excited and proud of myself - I had to tell the world.

There is no substitute for hard work and preparation, so when opportunity arises you are positioned and capable to take advantage of any great thing that comes your way.

An official announcement is due out tomorrow and I can't wait.

I must admit though in the midst of my joy I am anxious and a bit afraid of this new challenge. I'm hoping to channel those nervous emotions into motivation to push myself to do and be the absolute BEST candidate for the role.

Not everyone was on my "side" as the best pick of the three candidates. My young age was the number one key factor I was not favored. I was reportedly "too young" for such a prestigious and important position.

Now I have made it my personal goal to SHINE and prove my detractors wrong and my supporters right. My boss really put his neck on the line and went the distance for me and I am so thankful for his support and having the chance to learn from his immense talent.

I'm officially on a kick it hiatus - my career just jumped light years ahead of my social status. How nice is it to not only work in a job you love but to be able to make a CAREER out of it?! A job and a career are miles apart and now I'm thankful I know the difference first hand.

Like I said, Yeah me...And then..."Miles to go before I sleep" (Robert Frost).

Spoiled Nymph, newly promoted Vice President! :o%2

Is Hip Hop Returning to It's Revolutionary Roots?

Rapper Jay-Z decides to boycott Cristal 06/15/2006 5:15 PM, AP Rappers have long proclaimed their love for Cristal, frequently mentioning the high-end champagne in songs and popping the corks of the clear, gold-labeled bottles in music videos and at nightclubs.
But the makers of Cristal don't seem to feel the same way about hip-hop — at least that's one rapper-turned-record executive Jay-Z sees it.

Now president and chief executive officer of Def Jam Records, the multiplatinum rapper has decided to boycott his once-beloved bubbly over comments from Frederic Rouzaud, managing director of Louis Roederer, the company that produces it.
In The Economist magazine, Rouzaud said the company viewed the affection for his company's champagne from rappers and their fans with "curiosity and serenity."
Asked by the magazine if the association between Cristal and the "bling lifestyle" could be detrimental, Rouzaud replied:
"That's a good question, but what can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

The comments left a bad taste in Jay-Z's mouth. The rapper said he would pull Cristal from his small chain of popular sports lounges — where bottles of Cristal sell for $450 and $600 — as well as from his personal flutes.

"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the `hip-hop' culture as 'unwelcome attention,'" Jay-Z said. "I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including the 40/40 Club nor in my personal life."

Jay-Z plans to replace Cristal — which a club spokesman said it could never stock enough of — with Krug and Dom Perignon at the Manhattan and Atlantic City locations of his 40/40 Club. (There are plans for clubs in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong, according to the club's Web site.)

Rouzaud did not return a message seeking comment. But it was the writer of the article, and not Rouzaud, who used the phrase "unwelcome attention." After Rouzaud's comments about Dom Perignon and Krug, scribe Gideon Rachman wrote: "Both Dom Perignon and Krug have had their share of unwelcome attention, too."

Still, Jay-Z spokesman Ron Berkowitz said his client remains offended.
"They're trying to distance themselves from the hip-hop community," Berkowitz said. "The hip-hop world certainly helped elevate the presence of Cristal. At the end of the day isn't the goal for any company to sell bottles?"

Cristal, which Roederer considers its "jewel," began appearing on the lips of many hip-hop devotees following an onslaught of mentions in rap songs starting in the 1990s.
Jay-Z's adoration goes back to at least 1996, when he rhymed on the song "Can't Knock the Hustle": "My motto, stack rocks like Colorado/Auto off the champagne, Cristal's by the bottle."
Others with a fondness for Cristal include Sean "Diddy" Combs, Kanye West and Trina.
According to Agenda Inc., a brand strategy agency that tracks mentions in Billboard's top 20 songs, Cristal ranked No. 8 in 2005, behind brands such as Mercedes, Nike, Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 and is still family-owned, according to its Web site. Cristal was created in 1876 exclusively for Tsar Alexander II. Roederer stopped making the champagne after 1917 but started again in the 1940s.

Boycotts aren't new to hip-hop. In 2003, Pepsi agreed to give $3 million to charity after Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons threatened a boycott because the soda company canceled an endorsement deal with rapper Ludacris in the wake of complaints from commentator Bill O'Reilly.

No matter what you think about Cristal's comments....KUDOS to Mr. Carter for standing for something, instead of falling for anything, and that's real!

Adult ADD

I swear my personality type - I get bored easily. I HAVE to constantly be doing something new and different to hold my attention.

At work, you should see my desk, at any given time I have upwards of 10 projects in process sitting on my desk not to mention having my lap top on with 7 or more windows open, my desk phone's 3 lines ringing and my cell phone (on vibrate) that I will answer during the day. Then my homegirl calls to tell me to get on instant messenger - like I need anymore distractions.

They say that busy people get things done, and that's true, so I wonder if busy people also have Adult ADD cause I swear my mental capacity to juggle several things at one time has to be attributed to something other than my multi-tasking skills.

In my love life this means I get bored with relationships quickly so I have to continuously do something to keep things new and interesting, otherwise I'm outta here sucker.

Usually traveling satisfies my thirst for change. And I just got my PASSPORT too? Holla! Navan on the other hand is a more subtle sophisticated presentation and clean cut bottle.

Either or, I'm loving the options. For women it seems it takes us months, years even to decide on if we know and like our men well enough to put up with their BS for life i.e. get married.

And is this a good thing? Does this really let us, be us? I mean what if we aren't looking at you for a long term commitment, just casual dating and you've already lumped us in the "WM" category. I mean we could have only wanted a booty call and your introducing us to the parents.

I know boys mean it as a compliment (I think) but really is it? I have a sneaking suspicion that boys also use the whole "WM" rationale as an excuse not to man up and commit, be responsible, etc.

So which is it, and what is it - Wifey Material? A woman's strength, beauty and love is unmatched. It is what makes a woman unique - different from a man. The strength and endurance a woman has for loved ones both family and friends is bottomless. Women have the continued fortitude to dig deep and draw on strength even they did not think they had to support and maintain a "home" for family and friends.

Her love is boundless, it is overwhelming and complete. The love of a woman is the both the strongest and most sensitive thing on earth. It withstands the test of time, distance and hardship. It persists in spite of those things that made it tough to love, they make it easy. A woman's love has sustained the most desolate and comforted the most distraught. Not even death itself can diminish the warmth of a woman's love.

A women's beauty has both started and stopped wars, built great civilizations and ruined them. True beauty truly comes from within. Beauty is a state of mind, it emanates like a sweet fragrance from those women who have mastered the art of loving yourself and sharing that love with others. Beauty represents the complete package, a woman who's got it going on - on all levels from the home to the office to the community to the world.

To all the women doing their thing, discovering and loving themselves and their families and their friends, trying their best to be the best for themselves and others, from one sister to another on Mother's Day, OUR DAY, I love you and I encourage you to stay strong and keep on, keeping on!

Doing it well - so what do you call 'IT'?

"Everybody does it" we've all heard it, h#ll we may have even said it and *gasp* seen it, and while you personally may not have done it We hadn't been out as a clique in a minute and it was good to confirm that we STILL got it! lol We had fun. There were plenty of jokes, O!, about my M.I.A. status the last few weeks it's cool. I can't be out and about every weekend, too much of a good thing isn't good for anybody, so I hear.

We went to the Sip and were a little disappointed with the ticket price in regards to the hotness or lack there of, of the event. It was a little under attended and they RAN OUT OF WINE by 10:30pish-Lawd! First Fridays was that night, the OSU Heritage Festival (Block Party) Step Show and afterparty, somebody's birthday at the Cove, etc. Now I'm not complaining because the sistahs and I made it to more than a couple hot spots in the CO last night but the average Cols-ite couldn't handle all the options. *Shout out to AV who loves options :o)*

We also managed to run past the Bstone and catch the last hot sweaty kicking-it finale of First Fridays on the second floor with DJ O Sharp spinnin' that fire and Ed Mabry on the mic. We made our way in and quickly found a spot posted up, off to the side by the couch and the dj table and promptly got our jam on. It was good to see some fellow alum I haven't seen in a minute as well. Shout out to the Blookdy K Chapter Alpha's Big Mike (whassup Spec?!) and Los!

Straight Up Pimp, if you want me you can find me in tha "A"

So you want to know why they call it HOT-lanta?! :)

Can I start off by saying spending New Year's in ATL was the bomb! Thanks to my girl Ms. Pretty Green Eyes (be sure to check out her Blog) who invited me down to attend a New Year's Eve House Party one of her friends was giving. It took us about 9 hours to get there after a brief detour through TN. The drive down was scenic and uneventful, except for that one small traffic stop doing 79 in a 65 zone. lol

We talked ish the whole way and planned to get in as much kicking it in ATL as possible in this little weekend excursion including a visit to the infamous Magic City. The nice red Grand Prix we rented was a nice look too- and it drove well and got great gas mileage. Much to our dismay because don't let Ms. Pretty Green fool you she is a road trip NAZI I swear. Just make sure you use the bathroom and eat before you head out on the rode with this one because it will be hours like 6 before you're allowed a potty or snack break. But we made it, with about 30 minutes to spare before we were to head over to Vision ( www.visionatlanta.com) for a night of kicking it. We printed off a "free before 11" email flyer earlier and hoped to make it in before then so we could see what all the hype was about and kick it for FREE! We stayed at the Mariott at the airport (thanks to my boy D!), a very nice property not far from downtown. We checked in, changed in record time, and was back out headed for the club in about an hour.

When we got there we parked about a country mile from the spot and had to walk about 3-4 blocks. The "free before 11" email flyer line was wrapped around the building and after a walk like that from the parking we went to the shorter, pay line that moved MUCH faster. Let me say that they just weren't ready for us, to all my Ohio-ians, let me say that my girl and I represented the Capitol City lovely in the dirty south. I started out with pressed hair hanging way down my back, a sexy open front top some T.A.Ps and a pair of leather off white boots - by the time we got through kicking it the 'do was more like a curly jasmine guy ponytail and a sweated out tank. But we had a good time kicking it and meeting and greeting the resident ATLiens.

In fact, I met one real nice, good looking, well dressed, GOOD SMELLING (I LOVE a man that smells good) brother in the VIP section of the reggae room. He was polite and respectful and didn't dance all up on me, which I HATE so he was off to a good start. Plus his good looks belied his age and y'all know I like old men. lol We drank Moet momosas (sp?) and Hypnotic and grooved to some banging sounds with caribbean and African peoples all night. Minus the chick in the corner of VIP throwing up her insides into a GLASS and that they bar wasn't stocked with NAVAN, tsk, tsk, tsk, the club scene at Vision was tight. I still don't think it is bigger than Dream in D.C. which I had heard. It only had one main floor with a bunch of different rooms, not several floors and several rooms like Dream, but I'm not complaining.

After we hit the IHOP Ms. Pretty Green's fav. for breakfast to soak up some liquor and headed back to the telly.

The next day was on and popping. We had an official Diva Day at Atlanta salons. We started with getting our 'do busted at Filon's (thank you W!), where we also picked up some hot silver jewelry and ended in the Asian nail shop getting the toes, fingers and eyebrows touched up, all for under $30 bucks minus the tip! I LOVE Atlanta, the prices for the hair and nail services was bananas. At these rates I'd STAY fly in Georgia. We did run into a few more haters than were used too. The women were going out of their way to throw shade - but I guess having inner and outer beauty, self esteem and confidence would make a lesser woman hate. *shrug* We kept it moving though.

We swung by and picked up a big A bottle of Belve and headed back to the telly to get ready for the new year's eve house party we drove all this way to attend in the first place.

July 5, 2005

Happy belated 4th of July!
